A genuinely single room at the back of the house, over the garden. Quiet, cheap, and the one regulars ask for by name when they are travelling alone.

A Georgian house in Wigtown, two minutes from twelve bookshops and ten from the bay. Rooms from £85, and breakfast is not an extra.
Booking sites take about fifteen percent of every room we sell. Come to us directly and we hand most of that straight back: five percent off the rate, and breakfast for two included every morning.
Breakfast is counted at £18 for two, which is what we charge people who walk in off the square for it.
Booking direct is worth £72 on this stay.
Craigend was built in 1817 for a corn merchant and has taken in guests since 1968. We bought it in 2016, spent two winters putting it right, and have run it ourselves ever since.
Eight rooms, all different, because the house was never designed to have eight of anything. Two are on the ground floor. Three take dogs. One has a bath you could lose an afternoon in.

Ground floor at the back, with a door straight out into the walled garden. Dogs are welcome in this one and it is the easiest room to reach without stairs.

Level access from the car park through to a wet room, with the widest doorways in the house. Grab rails, a shower seat and a lowered bed as standard.

Made up as a twin or a superking, whichever you ask for. Three walls of shelves that we have never quite managed to empty, and a chair by the window that people do not leave.

First floor front, two tall sash windows, and the estuary in the distance when the weather allows it. The lightest room in the house by some margin.

A double and a single in one large room, with space for a cot besides. A proper deep bath, and the only room where nobody minds a bit of noise.

Across the yard with its own front door: two bedrooms, a sitting room and a small kitchen. Booked as a whole, and usually a week at a time.

Not a room you sleep in. The fire is lit from October, the papers arrive by eight, and breakfast is served next door from half seven — eggs from a farm four miles up the road and a kipper if you ask the night before.

Scotland's National Book Town since 1998. Twelve bookshops for a population of under a thousand, which is either wonderful or absurd depending on how long you stay.
On the square
Twelve of them within four hundred yards, including one you can rent and run yourself for a week. The Book Festival takes over the town every September.
5 minutes
Scotland's most southerly distillery, on the river at the end of the road. Tours most days, and they will hold a bottle behind the bar for you.
10 minutes on foot
Britain's largest local nature reserve. Geese in their thousands from October, and a hide at the end of the track if you would rather sit than walk.
15 minutes
Nineteen boulders in a field, four thousand years old, with no ticket office and usually nobody else there. Go at dusk.
They rang the distillery for us, booked the tour, and had a taxi waiting. We had asked about none of it.
Booked direct after seeing the site. Cheaper than Booking, and breakfast was worth staying up for.
Third year running. They put us in The Library without being asked and remembered the dog's name.
Arriving after 8pm is no trouble at all, we would just like to know so somebody is up.
